From the Pastor

Pastor's Pencil June 2020

5/29/2020

Dear members and friends of SUMC,
Greetings to you!
It has been more than two months since we were forced to live under the social distancing condition. Some of you may have cabin fever. Some may find it difficult making ends meet with reduced income, or loss of job. It’s heartbreaking to learn that at the present moment over 90,000 Americans lost their lives from coronavirus.

We have not seen each other in person and I know that many of you miss being in church, singing, praying, worshiping, and fellowshipping together. I hope and pray that our government leaders and church leaders would make wise decision about when we can ease into opening our sanctuary for worship.

As we say, “Safety first.” God wants you to be safe and well. So I would encourage you to do whatever you feel comfortable to keep yourselves safe and well. To quote Jesus, “Sabbath is for people, not the other way around,” church is for you and you are not for church. So take care of yourself first and our church leaders will do what it takes to avoid harming you and to do good for you.

So let us be flexible and adapt ourselves to ever changing life’s situations. It’s been said, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.” It’s American spirit that when we roll with the punches and get back up and fight on. It’s Christian attitude that we find something good in every situation.

Let us believe that with God’s help, we can overcome this challenging time and come out as a more unified, stronger, and wiser country.

May you and your loved ones be safe and well until we meet sooner than later!
Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Jerry

“You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.” – Matthew 4:10

The devil said to Jesus, “Sell your soul to me, and I will give you money, power, and glory.” Jesus said, “Get away from me, Satan! Worship God and serve Him only.” Many people sell their soul for money, power, and success. They ignore God, betray their conscience, and toss their morality. Eventually they ruin their lives because cheaters never prosper. Let’s say “No” to the devil. Let’s say “Yes” to God.

Today’s prayer:
Dear Lord, save us from the devil of egotism, anger, and greed. Give us faith, hope, and love. Amen.

2.    Positive, beneficial thoughts trigger the release of beneficial hormones in the body and these in turn help the body to heal itself.

“You are the light of the world.”   - Matthew 5:14

When the universe was dark and void, God said, “Let there be light.” When the world was dark with sins of greed, hatred, and violence, Jesus came as the light of the world. Jesus brightened the world with his love and wisdom. As Jesus was leaving the earth, Jesus said to his disciples, “You are the light of the world. Rise and shine.” Jesus is inviting us to the task of brightening the corner where we are.

Let us pray:
Dear Lord, there are many people in the world who live in the darkness of poverty, despair, and godlessness. Help us to be the light that brightens their heart. Help us to reflect the light of Christ for the dark world. Amen.

1.    Tell me what you are busy about, and I will tell you what you are.
                                – Goethe
2.    It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.
-     Epictetus
3.    It is indeed possible for us to mature out of a belief in God. What I would now like to suggest is that it is also possible to mature into a belief in God.   – M. Scott Peck, American psychiatrist

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”   - Mathew 4: 17

Repentance means making U-turns in our minds and hearts. Repentance means change of our thoughts and actions. When I was in Korea, I spoke Korean. When I came to the United States, I had to learn a new language, English. When the Roman Empire was in power, Jesus declared that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. The earthly kingdom of greed, injustice, and violence was fading. The heavenly kingdom of justice, peace, and love was dawning. As the citizens of the kingdom of heaven, let us learn the new language of the kingdom of heaven: selflessness, justice, and peace.

Let us pray:
Dear Lord, we live in the secular world where money and power are the rulers. We pray for arrival of the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. Help us to live our lives as the citizens of the kingdom of God by practicing justice, peace, and kindness.

1.    Every end is a new beginning.
2.    Pour your gold into your mind and your mind will fill your purse with gold anew. – Benjamin Franklin
3.    The happiest person is the person who thinks the most interesting thoughts.
                       – Timothy Dwight, former president of Yale University

“You are the salt of the earth.”  - Matthew 5:13

Salt gives flavor to food. Without salt, the food tastes bland and flavorless. Jesus wants us to add flavor of joy and happiness to people’s lives. Salt is also used as a preservative. Without salt, the food goes bad easily. The world is corrupt with lies, cheating, stealing and cover-ups. Jesus wants his followers to be honest and trustworthy people who  keep our society from corruption.

Today’s prayer:
Dear Lord, as we cautiously open our businesses, restaurants and bars, we pray for the safety and health of people. Help us to use common sense and take care of ourselves and take care of each other. Amen.

1.    Man is born to live, not to prepare to live.   – Boris Pasternak
2.    How a person masters his fate is more important than what his fate is.
3.    I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.   – Henry David Thoreau

“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”    - Matthew 4:4

We need food for our body. But we also need God’s word for our soul. We live in a materialistic society where money talks and God is muzzled. Jesus came to say to us, “God’s word matters! Truth matters!” Many people sell their soul for money and power. Jesus came to save us from the demons of greed, egotism, and selfishness. Jesus said, “True life does not lie in material possessions. True life lies in righteous living in God.”

Today’s prayer:
Dear Lord, we are tempted to bow down to the idols of money and power. Help us to worship God only. We love money and use people when we should love people and use money. Help us to be the master of material things, not the slave of material things. Give us wisdom as well as bread. Amen.

1.    Life was meant to be enjoyed, not regretted.
2.    Don’t complain about growing old – many, many people do not have that privilege.
3.    Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living. And your belief will help create the fact.   – William James
