“The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul.”  - Psalm 19:7

Recently I watched the popular Netflix docuseries “The Tiger King.” There were people in the show who seemed to be governed by the passions of hatred, greed and competition. The main character, the Tiger King, ended up in prison for illegal activities. If we violate the laws of our society, we forfeit the protection and the rights that the laws provide. God’s law is higher than the laws of our society and our religion. God’s law is expressed in the Ten Commandments but not limited to the Ten Commandments. Jesus said, “God’s highest law is love.” Love and justice are like two wings of a bird.

Today’s prayer:

Dear Lord, help us to listen to the voice of God in our heart. We pray that we will live our lives by our conscience which is our guiding star and moral compass. Amen.

1.    Don’t try it! Do it.

2.    Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.
                          – John Wooden

3.    The way to show that your religion is true is not to yell and scream about it. The way to show that your religion is true is to live it.  -Rabbi Marc Gellman

Pastor's Message May 2020

Dear members and friends of SUMC,
Shalom to you!
We are going through an unprecedented coronavirus crisis. The whole world is fighting this invisible, microscopic virus that threatens our very lives. Close to home, a former SUMC pastor was in ICU with coronavirus and, thank God, he has recovered and is back home with his family. Please continue to remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

People who have been on ventilators realize how lucky they are to be able to breathe again without a ventilator. Their eyes open to the truth that they have been truly blessed with the ability to breathe on their own. We don’t realize the blessings of health until we lose our health.

Albert Einstein said, “To those who believe, everything is a miracle. To those who doubt, nothing is a miracle.” We often think that a miracle happened when some recovered from a terminal cancer or a coronavirus. But we don’t realize that it’s a miracle that we don’t have cancer or coronavirus at all.

Being able to walk, being able to see, and being able to speak are some of the miracles that we often take for granted. Helen Keller had triple handicaps. She was blind, deaf and mute. And yet, she did not let her physical handicaps keep her from achieving what she wanted out of life. She lived her life to the fullest with what she had, instead of crying over what she did not have.

She wrote an essay titled, “Three Days to See.” In the essay, she wrote, “If God gives me three days to see, I would like to see my dog, go see a play, and go to a big city to roam around like an ordinary person.” She also wrote, “If everybody should have three days of being blind, deaf, and mute, he or she will realize how blessed they are.”
No matter how healthy, wealthy or lucky, there will come a day when God will call our name. Someday we will all die. While we are still here, take time to look at the stars, smell the roses, and be kind to one another.

The coronavirus crisis will be over sooner or later. Let’s learn a valuable lesson that everything is a miracle. Let’s celebrate little things in life.

When the night is the darkest, the stars shine the brightest.
Shalom to you all!
Pastor Jerry

“Noah walked with God.”       -Genesis 6:9

Everybody knows the story of Noah and Noah’s ark. Some even remember that Noah fell asleep, drunk and naked. His second son, Ham, laughed at the embarrassing sight. After he woke up, Noah cursed Ham. So Noah was not a perfect person. Nevertheless, the author of Genesis wrote that Noah walked with God. Despite his flaws, Noah’s faithfulness to God was undeniable. As God does not have a physical body, Noah’s walk with God is not to be taken literally, but metaphorically and symbolically. Walking with God means that Noah’s relationship with God was close and intimate. God talked to Noah, and Noah listened to God and obeyed Him. Let us walk with God hand in hand?

Today’s prayer:

Dear Lord, we learn that Noah listened to God and obeyed Him. With God’s order, Noah prepared for the big rain even when the sky was blue and his neighbors ridiculed him. Give us wisdom and faith to prepare for our rainy days. Amen.

1.    If you are faithful to God, God will be faithful to you.

2.    America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand. – Harry S. Truman

3.    A real patriot is the fellow who gets a parking ticket and rejoices that the system works. -Bill Vaughan

“Blessed are those who hear the word of God, and observe it.”  - Luke 11:28

Everybody wants to go to heaven. But nobody wants to die. Everybody wants to be blessed. But nobody wants to obey God’s word. What does God want from us? Prophet Micah said, “God wants justice, kindness, and humility.” God blesses us when we are honest, fair, kind, humble, and caring. God teaches us lessons when we are dishonest, unfair, cruel, arrogant, and egotistical. God’s mill grinds slow but sure.

Today’s prayer:
Dear Lord, we realize that life is not what it’s supposed to be, but it is what it is. Help us to accept what we cannot control. Help us to focus on what we can and what we can will increase. With God’s grace, we will be amazed at how much we can accomplish in life. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

1.    I cannot love anyone if I hate myself.  – Carl Jung

2.    Some folks are always looking for the bright side; others roll up their sleeves and polish up the dull.        – Don Marshall

3.    Human felicity is produced not so much by great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as by little  advantages that occur every day.       - Benjamin Franklin

“How much is better it is to get wisdom than gold.” – Proverbs 16:16

We live in a capitalist society. We say “Money talks.” Some say, “Cash is king.” Some even kill for money. But the Bible tells us that wisdom is more precious than gold. It is better to have wisdom with little money than to have lots of money without wisdom. Without wisdom, rich people can be foolish, dangerous, and miserable. But with wisdom, poor people can be peaceful, hopeful and successful. Money can be lost or stolen. But wisdom cannot be lost or stolen. Without money, life is difficult. Without wisdom, life is impossible. The way to having wisdom is to live according to God’s will, not our will.

Today’s prayer for president, governors, and mayors:
Lord, give our political leaders wisdom and courage to work for well-being, unity, and peace for all people. Help them to listen to God’s voice and their conscience, not their ego, political ambition, or partisanship. Amen.

3.    Two men looked out from prison bars, one saw the mud,

“We walk by faith, not by sight.”   - 2 Corinthians 5:7
I saw a picture of a pyramid on a billboard beside highway 41. Underneath the picture was a saying, “It all started with an idea.” The great pyramid came into being by an idea, faith, hard work, and persistence. Faith is the ability to see what is invisible. When I dream, I see things with my eyes closed. Dream, faith, and hard work can make an invisible idea a tangible reality. Walk by faith.

                                     A prayer of Rabindranath Tagore

“Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless in facing them.
Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain but for the heart to conquer it.
Let me not look for allies in life’s battlefield but to my own strength.
Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved but hope for the patience to win my freedom.
Grant that I may not be a coward, feeling your mercy in my success alone,
But let me find the grasp of your hand in my failure.”

1.    We need to learn to set our course by the stars, not by the lights of every passing ship.
                                 -Omar Bradley
2.    Nothing will work unless you do. – Maya Angelou
3.    You are successful the moment you start moving toward a worthwhile goal.
