Pastor's Pencil: Preparing the Way for Christmas

11/27/2015

Advent is the time leading up to Christmas. It’s intended as a time of
preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth, much as Lent is a time of preparation for celebrating Easter. Some of the scripture readings have to do with the second coming of Christ. These readings remind us of the transience of our life on Earth, and to be spiritually prepared to meet God. This is something easily lost during this busy season. Here are some ways we can prepare ourselves for Christmas:

 Remember that Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, when God came to us in the human form of Jesus.

 Reflect on our relationship with God. Is there sin in our lives that we need to address? Are we practicing the “means of grace” such as Scripture reading, Prayer, and coming to church on Communion Sunday to participate in the Lord’s Supper?

 Reflect on our relationship with others. Do we need to say anyone? Are we withholding forgiveness from someone who said "I'm sorry” to us?

 Remember the needy. Advent and Christmas is a great time to give a
little extra. Numerous charities are asking for donations during this
season. Visit the homebound or those in nursing homes. Volunteer.

May your Advent be a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord, as well as a time to enjoy family, friends, gift giving and good food.

Merry Christmas,

Pastor Eric
